What should I know before submitting work for external firing at Cone 7?
What clay types do you accept?
We accept stoneware and earthenware clays suitable for electric kilns.
The clay body must be clearly labeled with:
- Manufacturer and clay name
- Maximum firing temperature
We do not fire unknown, unlabeled, experimental, or raku clays.
If you are unsure whether your clay is suitable, please contact us before drop-off.
What about glazes?
You may use your own glazes, provided they are:
- Clearly labeled
- Suitable for electric kilns
- Within the firing range of the clay body
Glazes must be applied correctly and responsibly. Improper glaze application or excessively fluid glazes can run during firing and cause serious damage to kiln shelves or the kiln itself.
Cone 7 is not responsible for glaze defects such as running, pinholing, crawling, blistering, or unexpected surface results.
If glaze runs or improper application cause damage to kiln shelves or kiln equipment, repair or replacement costs may be charged to the maker.
Highly fluid, experimental, or ash glazes must be approved in advance and may require additional fees or protective measures.
Can I fire pieces without glazing?
Yes. You may choose:
- Bisque firing only
- Bisque and glaze firing
The standard firing fee covers both firings if you choose to glaze.
How long does firing take?
Each firing cycle takes a minimum of three days, including:
- Heating curve
- Cooling time
- Kiln loading and unloading
Firing timelines depend on kiln availability, studio workload, and safety checks.
As a general guideline:
- Bisque firing: approximately 1-3 weeks
- Glaze firing: approximately 1–3 weeks after glazing
Exact firing dates cannot be guaranteed.
Who is responsible if a piece breaks?
Ceramic processes involve inherent risks during drying, firing, and cooling.
Cone 7 is not liable for:
- Cracks, warping, or breakage
- Glaze defects or color changes
- Damage caused by unsuitable clay, glaze, or construction methods
By submitting work for firing, you acknowledge and accept these risks.
Can I fire very large or unusual pieces?
Extra-large, heavy, or complex pieces must be discussed in advance.
Acceptance and pricing are determined on a case-by-case basis.
How do I arrange a drop-off?
